What if you had a card that can give you access and benefits of what New York City has to offer? Well, that opportunity has now arrived with the new identification card for New York City, IDNYC. The new card was introduced on January 12th by Mayor De Blasio to focus on undocumented immigrants, but it is available to anyone who's a resident of the five boroughs and at least fourteen years old and older.
The card gives you access to schools, hospitals, services including the NYPD and buildings throughout the city. It's also used as a library card for all three city libraries (Queens, Brooklyn, NYPL) and a prescription discount card. It can even give you a special one-year free membership to thirty-three of the city's museums and cultural institutions (featuring the Bronx Zoo, American Museum of Natural Science, Museum of the Moving Image, NY Hall of Science and more) and discounts to Broadway shows, movie theatres, sporting events, theme parks, attractions and more. Plus, you can use it to open a bank or credit account at several financial institutions throughout the boroughs.
It was originally going to be received via walk-ins at enrollment center throughout the city, but due to high demand on the day it debuted, Mayor De Blasio announced that you need to make an appointment to apply for the card. The downside is that you have to make an appointment for June or July to get the card, which means you have to wait throughout spring right into summer to apply for it. There are eleven enrollment centers in the boroughs including three here in Queens. Plus, you'll get the card for free only during this year. Next year, there will be fees to get the card.
In my opinion, I think that the new identification card will be a big success for the city because it may help start a new ad campaign to target people to move to the Big Apple and other major cities like Los Angeles, Chicago and Washington DC may follow suit with this practice. I love living in this city and I'm proud that there's a new card that certifies residents as true New Yorkers. Let's hope the card becomes a smash hit in the city that never sleeps.
