Tony Picks 2014

It's almost Tony Awards time again. Broadway's very own Christmas Day is just around the corner and this year, unlike last, there's no big front-runners in many categories. Despite the nominating committee snubbing some big Hollywood names (James Franco, Daniel Radcliffe, Daniel Craig & Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams, Denzel Washington), it's a tough race to handle with lots of recognizable names and shows that aren't making 'big-blockbuster' status but doing well in the box office. And now, here are my predictions.

Best Musical:
-After Midnight
-Aladdin
-Beautiful-The Carole King Musical
-A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder

My Pick: Gentleman's Guide just won the Drama Desk, Drama League and Outer Critic awards for best musical, but there's a lot of Tony voters from outside New York who want a show that is worth touring for all of the county to see. I think After Midnight is the show to win. It may be an underdog in awards time, but I think it will be more noticed.

Best Play:
-Act One by James Lapine
-All The Way by Robert Schenkkan
-Casa Valentina by Harvey Fierstein
-Mothers and Sons by Terrance McNally
-Outside Mullingar by John Patrick Shanley

My Pick: It wasn't a great year for plays, but All The Way scored some best play prizes along the way (Drama Desk, Drama League, New York Drama Critics, Outer Critics) and is looking forward to get the biggest prize of them all.

Best Musical Revival:
-Hedwig and the Angry Inch
-Les Miserables
-Violet

My Pick: Hedwig already got the DD, DL and OCC for best musical revival and is ready to net this one.

Best Play Revival:
-The Cripple of Irishmaan
-The Glass Menagerie
-A Raisin in the Sun
-Twelfth Night

My Pick: The Glass Menagerie haven't had a Tony nomination for its previous productions on Broadway (65', 76', 84', 95' and 05'). Now the nominating committee had paid attention to the smash-hit recent revival. Let hope its' win in this category will make Tennessee Williams smile in his grave.

Best Actor in a Musical:
-Neil Patrick Harris, Hedwig and the Angry Inch
-Ramin Karimloo, Les Miserables
-Andy Karl, Rocky
-Jefferson Mays, A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder
-Byrce Pinkman, A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder

My Pick: After working a lot as a TV actor and MC of the Tonys ('09, '11, '12 and '13), Harris makes a big comeback to the NYC stage (he was previously in Contact and Rent) and makes it in a big way wearing a wig and rocking the Belasco stage seven times a week. He's finally getting his own Tony. No doubt about that.

Best Actress in a Musical:
-Mary Bridget Davies, A Night with Janis Joplin
-Sutton Foster, Violet
-Idina Menzel, If/Then
-Jessie Muller, Beautiful-The Carole King Musical
-Kelli O'Hara, The Bridges of Madison County

My Pick: I saw O'Hara in Bridges and she was marvelous and stunning in the role of Francesca. But this could be Muller's year. Turning in a great performance as songwriter Carole King and after working supporting roles in the past (Mystery of Edwin Drood, On a Clear Day, You Can See Forever), she comes into her own as a star and a Tony winner. Let's hope O'Hara breaks her five-nomination and no-win streak for The King and I next year.

Best Actor in a Play:
-Samuel Barnett, Twelfth Night
-Bryan Cranston, All The Way
-Chris O'Dowd, Of Mice and Men
-Mark Rylance, Richard III
-Tony Shalhoub, Act One

My Pick: Cranston will add a Tony to his award mantle (three Emmys for Breaking Bad, '08, '09, '10) for his masterful work as LBJ in All The Way.

Best Actress in a Play:
-Tyne Daly, Mothers and Sons
-LaTanya Richardson Jackson, A Raisin in the Sun
-Cherry Jones, The Glass Menagerie
-Audra McDonald, Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill
-Estelle Parsons, The Velocity of Autumn

My Pick: Expect a big standing ovation at Radio City this Sunday when Audra breaks the record and becomes the actor/actress with the most Tonys (six to be exact, previous wins in '94, '96, '98, '04 and '12).

Best Featured Actor in a Musical:
-Danny Burstein, Cabaret
-Nick Cordero, Bullets Over Broadway
-Joshua Henry, Violet
-James Monroe Iglehart, Aladdin
-Jarrod Spector, Beautiful-The Carole King Musical

My Pick: I'm wishing a Tony in Iglehart's future for his role of The Genie. Let's hope the voters grant it.

Best Featured Actress in a Musical:
-Linda Emond, Cabaret
-Lena Hall, Hedwig and the Angry Inch
-Anita Larsen, Beautiful-The Carole King Musical
-Adriane Lenox, After Midnight
-Lauren Worsham, A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder

My Pick: Hall will score one for playing her role as Hedwig's love interest, Yitzhak.

Best Featured Actor in a Play:
-Reed Birney, Casa Valentina
-Paul Chahidi, Twelfth Night
-Stephen Fry, Twelfth Night
-Mark Rylance, Twelfth Night
-Brian J. Smith, The Glass Menagerie

My Pick: A hard category to pick this year, but I'm going with Birney.

Best Featured Actress in a Play:
-Sarah Greene, The Cripple of Irishmaan
-Celia Keenan-Bolger, The Glass Menagerie
-Sophie Okonedo, A Raisin in the Sun
-Anita Noni Rose, A Raisin in the Sun
-Mare Winningham, Casa Valentina

My Pick: Bolger will win this one for sure.

Here are my picks for the other categories:

Best Book of a Musical: A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder, Robert L. Freedman
