Opinions: No Pass, No Law

As you heard from last week, a state judge has said no to Mayor Bloomberg's soda law, one day before going into effect. His law was to ban places such as restaurants, stadiums, movie theaters, and food carts from selling sugary cups or containers larger than 16 ounces. The judge handling the case, Milton Tingling said that Mayor Bloomberg exceeded his authority by sidestepping the City Council and placing the issue before the Board of Health.

So, how did it affects New Yorkers? I asked six people in school to see how they feel about it.

"I feel disappointed because the obesity rate is high".
                                                                                    -Mirsada, a student

"I feel sad and disappointed and the education rate is low".
                                                                                   -Rana, another student

"I think that there are more important things for the mayor to worry about besides soft drinks, such as jobs, affordable housing and crime".
                                                              -Mrs. Mercado, a library worker

"I'm happy that they didn't go through because people should be able to make their own decisions on what's healthy and unhealthy".
                                                             -Mr. Pangano, a school para

"I think that people should make informed decisions that work for themselves as individuals".
                                    -Ms. Saltzman, another library worker

"I think it's good, because he should not control our soda".
                                              -Joseph, a student

I think that the banning of the law is preposterous because this nation is on the verge of obesity. In my opinion,  Bloomberg's law to ban super large drinks should have been the first step to cut down the rate, starting here in the largest city in the world. I think that the judge should think and reconsider in 2 or 3 weeks to see if the law will work.
