Well folks, one week from today, it will be the night when America salutes and honor the world of movies for the 85th year in a row. The Oscars is all upon us. Within the week, the votes will be tallied and the envelopes will be set to announce the results for all the world to see. In the meantime, here's my own picks for next Sunday night.
Best Picture:
Amour
Argo
Beasts of the Southern Wild
Django Unchained
Les Miserables
Life of Pi
Lincoln
Silver Linings Playbook
Zero Dark Thirty
Could Win: For the past two months, Argo has been a lucky underdog, scoring Best Picture wins from the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild. Despite director Ben Affleck's nomination getting booted from the ballot, Argo is still going to grab the top prize.
Should Win: Argo
Best Director:
Michael Haneke, Amour
Benh Zeitlin, Beasts of the Southern Wild
Ang Lee, Life of Pi
Steven Spielberg, Lincoln
David O. Russell, Silver Linings Playbook
Could Win: With Affleck and Kathryn Bigelow {Zero Dark Thirty} both out of the running, Spielberg may be ready to get Oscar number three.
Should Win: Spielberg
Best Actor:
Bradley Cooper, Silver Linings Playbook
Daniel Day-Lewis, Lincoln
Hugh Jackman, Les Miserables
Joaquin Phoenix, The Master
Denzel Washington, Flight
Could Win: Day-Lewis may have the close edge.
Should Win: Day-Lewis
Best Actress:
Jessica Chastain, Zero Dark Thirty
Jennifer Lawrence, Silver Linings Playbook
Emmanuelle Riva, Amour
Quvenzhane Walls, Beasts of the Southern Wild
Naomi Walls, The Impossible
Could Win: Lawrence
Should Win: Lawrence, but I think Chastain may pull a upset win like last year's Meryl Streep.
Best Supporting Actor:
Alan Arkin, Argo
Robert De Niro, Silver Linings Playbook
Philip Seymour Hoffman, The Master
Tommy Lee Jones, Lincoln
Christoph Waltz, Django Unchained
Could Win: It's a hard category to choose this year, despite the nominees are all previous Oscars winners. I'm going to go with De Niro.
Should Win: On the second hand, Arkin could score for another one.
Best Supporting Actress:
Amy Adams, The Master
Sally Field, Lincoln
Anne Hathaway, Les Miserables
Helen Hunt, The Sessions
Jacki Weaver, Silver Linings Playbook
Could Win: It's Hathaway, bar-none.
Should Win: Hathaway
Here's my other choices:
Best Foreign Language Film: Amour
Best Documentary Feature: The Invisible War
Best Documentary Short: Redemption
Best Animated Feature: Brave
Best Animated Short Film: Paperman
Best Original Screenplay: Django Unchained
Best Adapted Screenplay: Silver Linings Playbook
Best Cinematography: Life of PI
Best Production Design: Anna Karenina
Best Costume Design: Anna Karenina
Best Film Editing: Argo
Best Score: Lincoln
Best Song: "Skyfall", from Skyfall
Best Visual Effects: The Avengers
Best Sound Mixing: Skyfall
Best Sound Editing: Skyfall
Best Makeup: Les Miserables
So, here are my picks. I'll be live-blogging the Oscars next Sunday starting at 8:30pm EST/5:30pm PST. Let's hope this year's awards will be a smooth blast.
