Remembering 2012

Well everyone, we have really made it to the last day of the year. For the past 365 days, we have re-elected a president who really took the word "change" seriously for the last four years. We have seen a legendary pre-school and children tradition in the news for an presidential victory plan for an cut of funding by a republican who never met a yellow bird/muppet he didn't like and a underage sex scandal that involved a puppeteer of one of the most lovable and funniest muppets ever in the world. We saw an legendary medal record-breaking athlete take his last swim. At the same time, we were introduced to three new stars in the sports circuit, two new swimmers and a group of women gymnasts. We were even introduced to a new dance that had the moves of the horse and started with a G.

On the big screen, we saw an foul-mouthed talking teddy bear, a team of Marvel's mightiest superheroes, a dark knight signing off for the last time, the return of your friendly neighborhood spider guy and 007, guys baring it all for the girls, the French Revolution being sung, and a look at reality TV in the post-apocalyptic era. On the small screen, we saw two girls battle it out for the role of Marilyn Monroe, one of the world's best actors/directors talking to a chair, four girls trying to make it after all, saying farewell to Dr. House and Wisteria Lane, Jake Harper going to war, Howard Wolowitz getting married and going to space, a man getting by his wife's death by taking in therapy, a gay couple having a baby, Jon Draper being surprised by his wife with a sleek black dress and a french song, one of TV's funniest female comics saying so long to a Saturday night tradition, restarting the Today Show Jane/Deborah curse of 1989, and another of the world's best actors accidentally saying the F-dash-dash-dash word in the morning.

On the New York stage, we saw a return of every girl's other redhead {next to Ariel and also begins with A, this time followered with a N}, newsboys going on strike and dancing to win, visiting Neverland with our imagination and a bit of stagecraft intact, the return of Edwin Drood,Virgina Woolf and a salesman, going back into the woods with Sondheim {only this time, it was for real}, a fighter telling about his life in and out of the ring, saying farewell to 'one' singular sensation, and maybe getting the funniest guy we got out of London since John Cleese and Mr. Bean.

In the world of gossip, we read about a prince accidentally showing his crown jewelers in Sin City and a mom-to-be princess who didn't know she was exposing her top and bottom for all the entertainment world to see. We also read about Beyonce's new bundle of joy, Jessica Simpson being a mom, losing pregnancy pounds, and gaining another baby, Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel tying the knot, and TomKat, Danny Devito & Rhea Pearlman, Will Arnett & Amy Poehler each called the whole thing with the word 'marriage' off. Plus, as of today, we have found out that Jay-Z's concert pal and the sex-tape girl we love to hate will be having their own kid. This is why you'll never know whether gossip is real or not.

This year, we have lost a singer we have always loved, both the first man to land on the moon and the world's first woman to fly in space, one of TV's best villains, America's oldest living teenager, the other half of TV's original odd couple, and the voice behind Mermaid Man.

Here in the city that never sleeps, we got another ticker-tape parade in February after a deja-vu Super Bowl by the Big Blue Boys. We lost a black radio station to ESPN. One of the most longest couples in television news history finally separated after three decades. The Mets finally got their first no-hitter. Plus, after years of losing the Dodgers, Brooklyn gains an new arena, the Nets and now, the Islanders. December 21 just came and went.

We had made it though three tragedies that hit our nation hard. The first one happened at midnight in Colorado on opening night of The Dark Knight Rises. It took 12 lives and made people think about the safety of movie theatres. The second was weather-related and it took place here in the Northeast and throughout the city and during Halloween week. The name of the storm was Sandy. It destroyed much of the Rockaways and perished many houses in Breezy Point. It even flooded my own church and my house was lost without power for over five days. The hurricane even put the Greenwich Village's Halloween Parade and the New York City Marathon on hold until next year.

Then, one month later, just as our city and nation was recovering from the crisis, over in Connecticut, two weeks before Christmas, terror striked a Elementary School in Newtown. The lives of 20 kids were tragically lost, in addition to 6 of the school staff who were trying their best to save their young students, and the mother of the shooter and the killer himself. This sad and shocking act of violence lead us to the most important question: Are we really safe anywhere?

Tonight, as you celebrate with family, friends and/or loved ones, remember the good times you had this past year and be more optimistic about what the new year will bring. My resolution for 2013 is for people to be good to each other more and to share lots of love.

Here's hoping and praying for one heck of a wonderful 2013. Adios, 2012. You were one powerful year.
